6G-NeXt

6G Native Extensions for XR (extended reality) Technologies

6G Native Extensions for XR (extended reality) Technologies

  • Duration:

Future services and applications, especially in the area of multimedia, will generate an unprecedented amount of data for industry, media and private users, which must be transmitted at a speed and reliability that today's mobile networks cannot achieve. The 6G Native Extensions for XR Technologies (short title: 6G NeXt) funding project has set itself the goal of developing an infrastructure whose integrated network and software layer will enable new processing technologies.NeXt is a pioneering project aimed at developing an infrastructure whose integrated network and software layers enable new processing speeds and the dynamic distribution of complex computing tasks (split computing). The latest software technologies combine computing and connectivity in an overall system whose capabilities go far beyond the edge cloud known from 5G. In the pioneering project 6G NeXt, a 6G-based infrastructure is being developed on which two demanding application cases from innovative and forward-looking industries in Germany will be researched and implemented using new system architectures, for which today's 5G network is not sufficient. The performance and efficiency of a new generation of networks will be determined by high-performance radio interfaces with application-optimized radio protocols as well as ultra-fast software stacks, intelligent media processing and the deep integration of communications technologies. The project focuses on the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) to optimize the overall system. The focus of the project is on implementation with open interfaces, easy integration, sustainable development and optimized cost effectiveness, so that the social acceptance of a new 6G technology is placed on a broad basis.
