Digital residence for public authorities – Ministry of Digitalization and DFKI develop AI cyber emergency call service for public administration

The Federal Ministry of Labor, Social Affairs, Transformation, and Digitalization (MASTD) of Rhineland-Palatinate is working with the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) in Kaiserslautern to develop an AI-supported cyber emergency call service for public administration in Rhineland-Palatinate. The aim is to provide fast and efficient support around the clock in the event of cyberattacks and IT security incidents.

The signing of a corresponding contract has now given the official go-ahead for the joint project. The cyber emergency hotline will be available to authorities in Rhineland-Palatinate around the clock. If, for example, a security incident such as a ransomware attack on the IT infrastructure occurs, artificial intelligence will support the specialists at the State Data and Information Agency (LDI) in their initial analysis and in initiating appropriate measures. It can also provide information on similar, already known attacks. 

“With this joint project, we are strengthening cybersecurity in Rhineland-Palatinate and setting an important milestone for the protection of our administration,” said Rhineland-Palatinate's Minister of Digital Affairs, Dörthe Schall.

As a leading research institution in the field of artificial intelligence, DFKI is contributing its expertise in the development of medical emergency call systems. This technology is being specifically adapted and further developed to meet the requirements of public authorities in dealing with cyberattacks and IT security incidents.

“The increasing threat of cyberattacks requires new, intelligent solutions”, emphasizes Andreas Dengel, Excecutive Director of DFKI in Kaiserslautern. “We are pleased to contribute our expertise in the field of intelligent analysis methods and emergency systems to this project in order to develop a solution that detects security incidents more quickly, analyzes correlations, and supports an effective initial response. In this way, we are making an important contribution to strengthening the digital resilience of public authorities in Rhineland-Palatinate.”
