Functionality

  • IRL RetailLaboratoryIRL

When a bottle is taken out of the instrumented shelf, it introduces itself to the customer using speech ("anthropomorphic products").
  • Some features of the selected wine are displayed on a screen together with its current temperature and a hint if the bottle has been shaken.
  • If two bottles are taken out of the shelf at the same time, a comparison chart showing their features is displayed on the monitor.
  • If a higher priced product is taken out of the shelf, general information about it is shown at first. By turning over the product and facing its back side, the web page of the producer is displayed automatically, on which the customer can get more information about the given product.

  •

Sensors

  • RFID tags: detection of the bottle position ("Is the bottle located inside or outside the shelf?")
  • µParts: measurement of the current bottle temperature and vibration detection. ("Does the wine have to be cooled? Has the bottle been shaken?")
  • Particles: detection of the current orientation of the product ("Which side of the product is the customer looking at?")

  •

Infrastructure

  • RFID antennas: mounted below the wooden shelves; used for detecting RFID tags
  • Bridges: connected to the computer via USB; used for communication with µParts and Particles

  •
  • Monitor: placed in or at the shelf; used for the visual presentation of product information
  • Loudspeakers: placed in the shelf; used for the acoustic presentation of product information
