Yes, if the driver is being used with anything else than serial. Recent
iodrivers_base integration allows e.g. to send raw data through orocos
ports, or if you have a serial-to-ethernet converter, or ...

Not currently, no. I would imagine that one could extend the current URI
specification for serial ports so that you can specify these parts (e.g.
8N1, 7E2)
